TARDIS Little Free LIbrary

Please visit the Facebook Page and give us a like! www.facebook.com/TARDISofSlidell

FAQ's:

What is a TARDIS Little Free Library? In fact, what is a TARDIS?
So first off, thanks for asking! Second, we now hope you will go learn about what a TARDIS is and why you too should love it. In a nutshell, The TARDIS--Time and Relative Dimension in Space is a time machine and spacecraft in the British science fiction television program Doctor Who and its associated spin-offs The Sarah Jane Adventures, Torchwood and more. So in a nutshell, for those who are not familiar with Doctor Who, the TARDIS is a machine that can travel through time and space. Now, finish reading this, and then go watch Doctor Who!

What is a Little Free Library? Well, it's a super awesome concept that you can read more about here. This is a wonderful organization that I highly suggest you support and tell others about. We are proud to be a part of this group and so thankful they came up with this idea! Basically, the premise is someone in the community maintains a small library where children can take a book, leave a book. So it is based on the honor system. You can take a book and bring two in return, or bring one to leave when you come to borrow. Or simply take a book, return it, and grab another! The point is for easy access, fun books and getting children to read!

But what about the local library? Let's get one thing straight. We LOVE our local library system. The St. Tammany Parish Library system is AMAZING and we are absolutely blessed with an incredible Slidell branch. This project is not done in any way to imply the library is not sufficient. But every librarian will tell you, the more access children have to books, the better!! We chose this location because it was in a location children frequent (an ice cream shop) and is within walking distance of many homes, a school, and a park. We hope the libraries will work WITH us and spread the word!

Why make it a TARDIS? So, you probably ask this question because you are not a Doctor Who fan, for if you were, you would not ask that question. So let me explain it like this, first off, this is not our original idea. I first saw it online, probably on Pinterest, and there is a super cool guy who I want to meet one day, who made one in his front yard! You can find them here.  There may have been someone before him who made one, but his is the first I found. I then met the awesome Paul of the Krewe Du Who who did make a full size TARDIS you can actually step in, and I realized...this man can do this. He can make this dream happen! So, I stuck my neck out, and approached the  man in the long scarf and we got the ball rolling! But I digress. So why is it a TARDIS? Because they're awesome.

Where can I see it? Well,you can't see it---YET. We are just getting the ball rolling and will update as we go along, but we have secured the location and the builder, Paul, is ready to get going. We do, however, need funds for supplies and materials. We will be creating a GoFundMe account soon with specific details on what the money will be used for. Once the TARDIS is built, yearly upkeep will be minimal and will run on donations and community support as well. Once it is built however, it will be inside the gate in the yard of the Old Town Soda Shop in Slidell, La at 301 Cousin St, Slidell, La 70458. We are very grateful to both Frank and Morris who are supporting this adventure. Without their support, we would NOT be able to do this. Details on accessing the TARDIS will come as she is built. (Yes, it's a she.)

How can I help!? We LOVE you for asking that question! Right now, the best way you can help is to share our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/TARDISofSlidell Once we get the GoFundMe account set up, we will alert you and we will start taking donations for the cost of supplies and materials, as well as stocking the library. In the meantime, if you have ANY books, we will take them! The focus will be books for children, non-fiction, and fiction but we will take any book that would be considered PG-13 and below. So chapter books, classics, picture books, banned books, we want them! So if you have any books you can donate please email Amy at mamaslittlemonkeys@Yahoo.com. If you are an author or publisher, we'd LOVE to talk to you and have your books in the TARDIS.

Who is doing this? I had wanted to build a Little Free Library for some time in our area. I am a former teacher, current homeschooling mom and I love to read! When I saw the TARDIS Library up north, I knew this would be an amazing thing to have down here, and would be perfect for Old Town Slidell. We have an amazing community here and we can make this an awesome project for all to enjoy! So thanks to the generosity of Frank and Morris at the Old Town Soda Shop and the awesomeness of Paul with the Krewe du Who, we will make this happen! So really, everyone who helps is doing this!!

Craft Hope Project 16: the littlest warriors

Many of you know, if you've read me any, that I have several dear friends whose children have battled or are battling cancer or another terminal illness. I am very excited to see Craft Hopes newest project, hats and bags for children battling cancer and receiving treatment.

Details can be found on the Craft Hope website here: http://www.crafthope.com/2012/01/project-16-the-littlest-warriors/ under project 16.

I am new to crochet and I am very excited to start hooking some hats. I don't think I'll have time to sew up any tote bags but perhaps some of you will?

Will you join me in helping make some darling hats for the kiddos to wear and bags to hold goodies in? Or perhaps you can donate some goodies to fill the bags with?? See the details at the link below on how and where to donate.

girl, disconnected....doing what I love again...

Day 9.....ahhh a good day. My mother-in-law blessedly took the children for a few hours so I was able to get some actual sewing done!! Serging, to be exact. It was so nice...I haven't been able to sew for awhile now, since school got out, and it was so nice to finish up a stack of to-do's.

First up, I FINALLY recovered my sofa pillows. Now that we have a doggy, I thought this was a good time so I can take the covers off and wash them.  You can see the original pillow under the sleeping Libby.

I also got most of my stack of pillowcases done for my Pillowcase Drive for ConKerr Cancer. I have a stack from a fellow handmade friend and as of now we have 19 cases ready! Hopefully I can reach my goal by the end of July, but even if not, I am happy we can send these over and hopefully make a sick child smile!

I've also had a lotta fun the past few days. I've danced to Adele with Eli, did arts and crafts with the boys and of course played with the dog. The poor doggy also encountered a cat and is recovering from an eye scratch, but hopefully she'll be fine. She goes back to the vet on Monday.

What have you been making and doing lately??

I did cheat and check facebook messages as apparently I had some people who needed answers to questions. But I was quick and just checked my messages!! :)

My big plans for tonight are hunkering down with a movie ("The Notebook." No, I've never seen it. I got a warning letter that they were gonna kick me outta the chick club if I didn't watch it.....so Netflix sent it along for me.) Popcorn, movie and snugging on the sofa. Don't call by the way..

Sock Monkey Workshops

This is too awesome not to repost from Miss Malaprop's site!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay, this is just awesome. Thanks to Humid Beings, I just found out about the Razzamataz Sock Monkey project that has been going on since 1999. Amazingly enough, I am actually still free on the dates they’ll be making sock monkeys this year, and the place where they’ll be doing it is really close to where I live. Who wants to join me?
Basically a bunch of people get together, spend the day making sock monkeys, and then they get delivered to disadvantaged kids in the New Orleans area. Awesome, right? They will be hosting a sock monkey building weekend workshop that is FREE and open to the public at Razzamataz Production Studios, 4820 Banks Street (Mid-City) in New Orleans (big red warehouse with a long driveway). The workshops will take place on Saturday, December 18th and Sunday, December 19th, from 10am – 6pm both days.
Don’t live in New Orleans? You can also make a tax-deductible donation of money or craft supplies, or make a sock monkey (instructions how to make one here) and send it to the Sock Monkey Project. For more info, contact Dr. Razzamataz at 504-301-8201 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              504-301-8201      end_of_the_skype_highlighting, visit www.razzamatazproductions.com, or email ryan (at) razzamatazproductions.com
Thanks Mallory for sharing!!! :) I hope to make it tot he Sunday one! I actually have a stash of red heel monkeys that need making!
Cards4Cancer...What it Means to Me
If you've not heard me talk about Cards4Cancer, well then you apparently don't pay attention to anything I facebook, tweet, plurk or talk about.
Cards4Cancer is from the awesome people at Spirit Jump. The goal is simple:
On Saturday April 10th, 2010 Spirit Jump and the team leaders around the world will deliver bags of uplifting cards to their local cancer centers to be given to those battling cancer. Cards can be collected by asking family members, friends, neighbors, schools, youth groups or just about anyway you can think of getting them. Cards can be handmade or store bought and should have a positive message to help JUMP the SPIRIT of someone who is battling cancer.
Our purpose is to bring hope and comfort to the many men, women and children battling cancer! Not just creating awareness but also having a direct positive impact on the lives of those that are hurting.
Spirit Jump has set a goal to collectively deliver over 100,000 uplifting cards. Join us and together we can reach this goal.
Here are my thoughts on C4C and why I really want you to pay attention and get involved.
Our lives are busy, that is apparent. There are COUNTLESS charities we can donate too, volunteer for. I, myself hold cancer and Autism as top priorities in my charity work, for personal reasons.
You may think that there are already so many people doing things, donating, volunteering that you don't NEED to help. Perhaps you are a single parent, caring for an eldery parent, work full time, have a large family, or just feel you don't have the money or time to help.
I beg of you to THINK AGAIN. Let's be real....the DOLLAR store has beautiful cards you can nab for just one dollar. If you are in the Slidell/Pearl River/ St Tammany area I will personally PICK UP YOUR cards from you if you can't afford to mail them to us.
If you have children this is a wonderful lesson for them. Your cards do not have to be 'perfect'. The simplest drawing from a child can warm the heart of a person suffering from cancer. Do you REALLY not have 5 minutes to draw a heart on a card and write "Thinking of you". REALLY?
Time is precious...I do agree. As is money in these very uncertain times. But if you are someone who is relatively healthy.. I can pretty much promise you have MORE time and probably more money than someone who is going through chemo, taking meds, losing their hair and possibly, preparing for the end of their life, or at least a very different life than what they were used to.
If YOU had cancer wouldn't YOU want to receive a thoughtful card of hope?
So please, please take the time to join a team, and send in some cards. If you'd like to join our team, Handmade Louisiana, that is fabulous. If not, please join a team near you!!
How to Join:
Here is a current list of teams if you want to find one near you
No Time to Make Cards? DONATE!
http://cards4cancer.org/?page_id=553
And get to making some awesome cards!!
**I made cards for my MawMaw, my sisters, and my good friends who have endured or are enduring cancer.
Many Thanks Cuteable!!
Well I woke up to a nifty surprise!! :) I was featured on a nifty blog called Cuteable! :)
My friend Jonie from Childish Thoughts and I were featured because of my listing of crayon rolls. Jonie lovingly made the rolls for me for my craft show and I had plenty left over, (though they were the biggest seller!) so I decided to put them to good use! :)
Profits from the sales of the rolls (more coming too!) benefit Slidell/Pearl River Head Start. You can read more about Head Start on my PIF blog.
So check out the feature and drop them a line! :) Oh and shop for charity of course!! :)
Baby Andrew
Hi! You may remember me mentioning the website ColesFoundation. I joined up and signed up to be part of the prayer team. They match you up to families and you pray/support that particular family. This is my family:
http://www.carepages.com/carepages/babyandrewakin
I highly encourage you to drop them a line also and if you are the praying type, to send a prayer their way. Even kind thoughts are welcome!! I don't think no matter your religion, if you are reading this, you are a person who cares about children and doesn't want to see a child suffer. So stop what you're doing for just a second, sign up on CarePages, and drop this family a happy thought, prayer, wish, or even donate.
Thank you!
Amy
